Chinese company's contribution to government revenue rises more than 400 percent

The Chinese multinational telecommunications company Huawei Technologies has been lauded for its contribution to the Ghanaian economy through taxation.

As China's foreign direct investment in Ghana continues to grow, so do the taxes that Chinese companies pay into the country's exchequer.

Huawei recently received an award from the Ghanaian government for its tax performance last year, when the amount it paid rose by more than 400 percent on the previous year.

At a ceremony in which Huawei and 12 other big taxpayers were thanked for their contributions, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Mona Helen Quartey, said their honesty with taxes helped the government pursue its national development agenda.

Philips Li, representing Huawei, thanked the government for the award and said the company was committed to fulfilling its tax obligations as a good corporate citizen.

Huawei employs more than 800 people in the country, and locals account for 84 percent of its workers. The company says it has 660 engineers for on-site support services and project implementation.

The company says it is committed to fulfilling its corporate social responsibility efforts and that since 2009 it has supported projects in education, health and economic empowerment.
