Wang Liying, CPPCC member and director at the Molecular Biology Department of the College of Basic Medical Sciences, Jilin University, put forward a report to the annual provincial CPPCC session proposing the construction of an organ transplant center in Jilin.

Wang mentioned that "Around 1,500,000 people require organ transplants in China every year." She argued, "Many provinces have established special centers to perform organ transplant surgery, but Jilin currently has no plans, mainly due to lack of organ donors."

She suggested that that an organ transplant center could support experts and doctors research and learn more about the medical technology involved. Meanwhile, the center can serve as an institute offering treatment to more patients in need.

Wang proposed that the Jilin government could cooperate with the First Hospital of Jilin University, which has rich experience in organ transplantation, to build its first organ transplant center.

The hospital successfully completed Jilin's first liver transplant in September, 2011, and has since completed another 144 similar procedures.

Additionally, the hospital has performed 451 renal transplants, five heart transplants and seven lung transplants.

Wang pointed out, "To date, the entire Northeast of China has fallen behind other parts of China in organ transplant research and operations." She said, "The establishment of an organ transplant center in Jilin can revive the medical scene of Northeast China and even Hebei province and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region to better serve patients in need."
