A recently founded committee at the International Copyright Exchange will provide evaluation services to banks for copyrights used in trading, collateral and financing. It will evaluate movies and TV dramas, artwork, literature, music and software, as well as provide legal consulting on copyright protection. The committee will first start with movies and TV dramas because the industry is mature and already has close ties with financial institutions, said Li Heng, chairman of the exchange.

iPad dispute 'No 1' IP lawsuit

The iPad trademark dispute between Apple and Chinese display maker Proview Technology was the "No 1 intellectual property lawsuit" in China this year, according to rankings unveiled at a Chinese Lawyers Intellectual Property Practice Forum held from Dec 8 to 9. The forum also provided an opportunity for the more than 200 lawyers in attendance "to share experience and improve skills", said Zheng Jian, deputy chief of the city's justice bureau.

China's first independently developed glass used as a core part in a 3D film projector was recently unveiled by its creator Shanghai DW-Vision3D Co. The company said its product is nearly at the same standard as the world's best optical devices in the field and added it is now developing a second-generation product that will surpass current global quality.

Illegal distilleries destroyed

The Luoyang industry and commerce bureau recently destroyed two illegal alcohol distilleries during a crackdown on trademark infringement that began last month. Officials said they seized 755 cases of fake-branded Chinese liquor with a potential retail value of about 300,000 yuan ($48,100) that carried counterfeited labels for Moutai, Wuliangye and Jiannanchun. The law enforcement bureau also seized 280 barrels of fake Nippon brand paint during the crackdown.

Experts to mentor in startups

An exhibition and transaction center for patent technology in the provincial capital Wuhan recently hired 13 pioneering entrepreneurs and intellectual property experts as mentors to provide free consultation to residents who start new businesses using patents. Dong Hongwei, director of the city's intellectual property office, said the initiative can reduce risks patent owners face in startup companies and promote the city's overall economic growth.

Intl agreement for partner info

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council recently signed an agreement with authorities in Denmark, the United States, Beijing and Shanghai on strategic cooperation in intellectual property. The first agreement ever signed by HKTDC to boost IP trading, the cooperation will include online IP services to help business startups by providing the latest market information and help with finding partners in Europe, the US and Asia.
