Youth IP seminar attracts more than 100 participants

The two-day 2015 China Youth IP Seminar, organized by the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, attracted more than 100 participants who gave speeches and took part in discussions. Its themes included IP litigation, trademark infringement, pharmaceutical intellectual property rights, amendments to patent law and service invention. Organizers said it would help young people exchange ideas and better deal with IP problems.

Service center at fair to offer free copyright registrations

Local copyright authorities will set up a service center at the seventh China International Animation Copyright Fair in Dongguan from Aug 20 to 24. The center will provide exhibitors with free copyright registration, help them safeguard copyrights, mediate disputes and publicize copyright-related regulations. The service center has provided 1,236 free copyright registrations in the past six fairs.

Province's patents forecast to be worth $2.5b by 2020

According to a recently unveiled provincial strategy for the next five years, patent ownership per 10,000 residents in Heilongjiang province is expected to reach 6.7 by 2020, when local companies are forecast to have 120,000 trademarks and technical trade volume of 15.8 billion yuan ($2.5 billion). The strategy, covering many areas of IP, including patents, trademarks, copyright and plant varieties, integrates the national IP strategy and the province's economic plans, officials said at a press conference on July 29.

Open house promotes copyright awareness

An open-house program will be held at the Tianjin Culture Asset & Equity Exchange on Thursday and Friday to promote copyright awareness among rights owners and local companies and institutions involved in cultural businesses. Free copyright consultations will be provided during the event, and copyright filers can enjoy a 20 percent discount on registration fees. The exchange was founded in 2012 as one of the copyright registration offices in the city. The event is organized by the Tianjin copyright trading center, a subsidiary of the exchange.

Shadow play performances with the theme of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression were shown in Wuhan on Saturday on the second stop of the shadow play tour. Survey shows store owners unclear about regulations

Students from Xiangtan University Intellectual Property Institute conducted a survey about IP issues on Saturday with store owners in the Shaziling area dealing in lighting facilities, furniture, building materials and toys. They used questionnaires and distributed leaflets promoting IP laws and regulations. The students found that most store owners do not have a clear understanding of IP rights violations or how to defend their rights, and suggested campaigns be organized to improve IP awareness.

Manufacturers and retailer ordered to stop infringement

Two facial care machine makers in Hong Kong and Shanghai and a retailer in Hangzhou, all with a common shareholder, were ordered to stop their infringement on a patent owned by L'Oreal for a facial cleansing brush, according to a recent ruling by the Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court. They must also pay compensation of 1 million yuan ($161,080) as well as 230,000 yuan in court costs. L'Oreal acquired the patent from Pacific Biosciences in 2013.

Soldiers at Pingxiang take part in promotion program

A promotion program for IP was launched at a border army base in Pingxiang on July 28 by a number of regional government agencies. In a speech at the launch ceremony, Yang Xiaodong, deputy director of the Guangxi Intellectual Property Office, said that IP protection in military innovation is important in building a strong army. The soldiers received free materials on IP protection during the activity.
