Domestic public opinion on new US Ambassador to China Gary Locke's frugality, especially on micro blogs, is divided into two totally opposite camps - one of praise, the other of criticism. Since Locke's diplomatic practice is common, it should not have drawn so much public attention. Some people cannot even understand that criticizing Locke's thrifty lifestyle is wrong, says an article in China Youth Daily. Excerpts:

Some domestic media outlets have blamed Locke for trying to "polarize Chinese people's fragile ideology". As if that was not absurd enough, some netizens have even called for "Locke's expulsion".

Instead of extolling the long-lost virtue of frugality, some people are criticizing Locke for practicing it. Frugality has been a traditional virtue in Chinese society and held in high esteem by the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government. Though some Chinese officials still practice frugality, China's fast paced economic development has prompted some officials to abuse their powers to make money and lead an extravagant life.

Many people think highly about Locke's lifestyle because they dislike the extravagance that some officials indulge in.

An ambassador should present a positive image of his/her country. As long as an ambassador's actions and lifestyle comply with laws and morality, and is inspiring, we should try to follow his/her example instead of being hostile to him/her.

People who are criticizing Locke for being thrifty lack basic common sense and refuse to see the good aspects of life.
