Make school mottos count

By Li Yang | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-02-27 20:18

A recent survey on the mottos of Chinese universities found that 60 percent of the polled college students do not believe that the mottos are important. Chinese universities should make their mottos count through concrete actions, says an article in the Worker's Daily. Excerpts:

School mottos are supposed to be the soul of the school, explaining the school's spiritual pursuit and objectives.

Chinese universities pay special attention to the readability of their mottos: they rack their brains to word their mottos or quote from Chinese ancient classics.

However, many mottos have a serious lack of practicability and are removed from real life.

Chinese universities have made great contributions to the development of the Chinese economy and society in the past 30 years. The schools should draw more inspiration from their roles in the country and formulate school mottos to inspire the students to achieve their dreams not only in China but also globally.
