Building skyscrapers isn't always beneficial in new cities

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-07-17 20:37

Governments should think twice before approving the construction of skyscrapers during the country's rapid urbanization, said an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).

Like the United States, China has more than 350 buildings taller than 152 meters, the international standard for skyscrapers.

Do Chinese cities need so many big buildings?

Many local governments view skyscrapers as symbols of modernity. Cities even compete over which has the highest or the most skyscrapers.

But some of the buildings lack necessary supporting facilities or do not fit the function, location or local culture of a city.

Every city in China has a unique history and culture. After more than 30 years of fast economic growth, many cities now look the same.

Skyscrapers should serve people's lives, not enslave them. Many newly built "ghost cities", or new city areas with few residents, become skyscraper forests that waste resources, land and energy.

City planners and governments must think ahead before giving the go-ahead to skyscrapers in old city areas while building new cities.
