Muhai Tang

Muhai Tang, widely respected as the pre-eminent Chinese conductor today, came to international recognition when Herbert von Karajan invited him to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in its 1983 subscription series. This success led to repeat appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic and invitations from many of the world’s leading orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Staatskapelle Dresden, Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Sydney Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony, among many others. He has been working at the highest level for the past 30 years. Previously Chief Conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Finnish National Opera, Zurich Chamber Orchestra and currently Music Director of the Belgrade Philharmonic, he received high acclaim recently for his work at the Zurich Opera House, where he conducted two Rossini operas featuring Cecilia Bartoli.

While maintaining a significant career in Europe, he has continued to spend much of his time in Shanghai as Music Director of the Shanghai Philharmonic and Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra as well as guest conducting throughout China. He has also been a tireless champion for Chinese classical music throughout the world. Muhai Tang is now at the helm of the Tianjin Grand Opera and its orchestra.

Tianjin is a city that was among the first in China to be introduced to western music. The city has a great many audience members who are deeply appreciative of symphonic music in Tianjin. Founded in 1985, Tianjin Grand Opera Orchestra is one of the major symphony orchestras in China.

Tianjin Grand Opera Orchestra devotes itself to the development of symphonic music. They have performed thousands of symphonic works as well as chorus and ensemble works by famous composers both from home and abroad. Musicians such as Xiaogang Ye,Yuankai Bao, Jianping Tang, Shengchagn Yao, Tingyu Liu, are made their debut on the music scene with Tianjin Grand Opera Orchestra. Tianjin Grand Opera Orchestra not only performed regular concerts locally, but also has frequently been invited to perform abroad in Korea, Germany, Russia, Holland, Singapore, Indonesia, Mongolia, HongKong and Taiwan,etc. In 2003, Tianjin Grand Opera was invited by The Japanese Department of Culture to give a successful concert at the second “Asia Symphony Festival”. The orchestra has also cooperated with numerous of the world’s top conductors .

In addition, Tianjin Grand Opera Orchestra has organized a variety of educatioinal activities with primary schools, high schools, and colleges. A music popularization project named “Ten years, thousands concerts, million people” , which was performed by Tianjin Grand Opera Orchestra and organized by Tianjin Education Committee, had a powerful impact in the community.

Tianjin Grand Opera Orchestra was presented the “National advanced cultural institution” award by The Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China.
