Beijing police release 'movie posters'

Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau's Weibo account has released a collage of posters featuring policewomen in unexpected poses that stunned people on the Internet, according to nandu.com.

The photos feature Beijing policewomen wearing steel helmets, body armor, carrying submachine guns and occasionally accompanied by SWAT cars or police dogs, showing strong images in classic Hong Kong police movie poster style.

It has become a trend to create such posters among police departments, catering to the tastes of young people.

Beware cell phone burns

A 26-year-old woman in Taiwan awoke to discover a pink mark on her cheek which turned out to be a slight burn due to her cell phone emitting heat, techweb.com.cn reported.

She had talked with a friend on the phone for half an hour before going to sleep and a hospital diagnosed the mark as a minor burn.

Experts advised people neither to put their phone too close to their cheek nor make calls while the phone is charging.

Swim to 'better life' illegal

A man named Wu Xian from the Chinese mainland spent eight hours swimming from Xiamen to Lieyu, which is governed by Taiwan authorities. He claimed he was going to settle down there, people.cn reported on Wednesday.

According to Wu, he had spent six months planning the trip and traveled two days by train from Chengdu to Xiamen. He didn't have a good life in Chengdu and believed he would have a better one in Jinmen.

He was accused of illegal entry and is under investigation.

Chimney becomes giant thermometer

An abandoned chimney has been converted into a huge thermometer costing 430,000 yuan ($69,822) by the Shaanxi government, Huashang Daily reported on Thursday.

According to an official, instead of being torn down, the unused chimney is better turned into the biggest thermometer in Shaanxi which can be used as a real temperature gauge and to promote tourism.
