Hamas lawmaker vows not to recognize Israel

Updated: 2006-09-24 13:45 A Palestinian lawmaker from
the governing Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), vowed Saturday that Hamas or
any government it leads will not recognize Israel.

"Frankly, we and any government Hamas leads will never recognize the Israeli
enemy or its legitimacy," said Ismail Radwan, adding that the Hamas stance would
remain firm even if it lead to disagreements with other factions.
Radwan said that Hamas takes its force from the Prisoners Document of
National Accordance which didn't urge the recognition of Israel and maintained
the Palestinian principles.
But for other Palestinians, the document, initiated by Palestinian prisoners
in Israeli jails, called for an implicit recognition of Israel by claiming a
Palestinian statehood alongside Israel.
Radwan, meanwhile, dismissed accusations by the opposition Fatah movement
that Hamas doesn't believe in democracy, saying that the democracy doesn't
support "means of toppling the government by chaos and anarchy.
Accused Fatah leaders of releasing "inappropriate statements against Hamas
and its government, Radwan said that Hamas is interesting to let "other factions
join the upcoming government of national unity while Hamas has the parliamentary
majority and was able to form it alone".
