WHO confirms 1,490 H1N1 cases in 21 countries

GENEVA -- The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on Tuesday a total of 1,490 laboratory tested A (H1N1) flu cases from 21 countries, including 30 deaths.

The largest numbers of cases continued to be reported from North American countries, including Mexico (822), the United States (403) and Canada (140), the UN agency said in a latest update.

Mexico's cases included 29 deaths. The only other deaths was reported from the United States.

Other governments that have reported laboratory confirmed cases include Spain (57), Britain (27), Germany (9), New Zealand (6), France (4), Italy (5), Israel (4), El Salvador (2) and South Korea (2), Austria (1), Colombia (1), Costa Rica (1), Denmark (1), Ireland (1), Portugal (1), Netherlands (1), Switzerland (1), and Hong Kong, China (1).

WHO Assistant Director-General Keiji Fukuda said Tuesday that the disease was still spreading. But he said there was still no evidence showing the new flu virus causing community-level transmission in regions outside North America.

"We do not feel we are seeing that right now," Fukuda told a news briefing, adding that most cases in Spain and other European countries were related to travel.
