Policeman killed, 8 injured in bomb attacks in Iraq

BAGHDAD: An Iraqi policeman was killed and eight people were injured in separate bomb attacks in Iraq's western province of Anbar and Baghdad on Monday, police said.
A policeman was killed when an explosive charge attached to his car detonated and destroyed his vehicle in the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The blast came as insurgent attacks increased recently in the once volatile province of Anbar, which has been relatively calm for more than two years after Sunni tribes and anti-US insurgent groups turned to cooperate with the US troops and Iraqi security forces against al-Qaida in Iraq network.

In separate incident, two civilians were wounded when a roadside bomb went off in the Baladiyat neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, he said.
In central the capital, two civilians were injured when a roadside bomb went off in Karrada district, he said.
Also in central the city, two more civilians were wounded when a bomb stuck to their car while passing through a street near the abandoned al-Muthanna Airport, he added.
Earlier in the day, a police source said that the mayor of Tal Afar town in the northern province of Nineveh was killed together with his driver and his bodyguard when a suicide bomber struck their convoy in the town.
Seven more people were wounded by the attack in the town located some 80 km west of the provincial capital city of Mosul.
Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, is said to be one of the last strongholds of insurgent groups and al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.
Sporadic attacks continue in Iraq as part of recent security deterioration which shaped a setback to the efforts of the Iraqi government to restore normalcy in the country ahead of the country 's national polls next year.
