After the World Wall II, Japan was required to return all territories it conquered in Treaty of Shimonoseki to China. In the 1951 San Francisco Treaty between Japan and the United States, the Diaoyu Islands was placed under the administration of the United States despite of China's protest as a result of Cold War hysteria.
