China is playing an increasingly prominent role on the world stage, and what China does is an increasingly important factor in how the world moves. Davos is a unique forum that brings together - on fully neutral ground - heads of state and government, business leaders and thinkers of all sorts. The presence of Premier Li is a sign that Davos maintains its relevance and usefulness, and that China is determined to play its role as a world leader.

It is important that global leaders regularly exchange views. One message being sent is that Davos is an excellent opportunity to exchange views and ideas on current topics with other global leaders. In addition, Switzerland is an important investment opportunity for China, and vice-versa.

The Davos meeting is an important meeting, and Premier Li's participation signals that the Chinese government believes it is important to participate in the dialogue about global economic policy, and for China to signal engagement. I don't think it is the time for discerning discussions about China's structural economic problems but an opportunity for Premier Li to strengthen his resolve in tackling them.
